How To Refresh Your Outdoor Table
If you've got an outdoor table that's seen better days, you're in the right place. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through the process of giving your tired outdoor table a budget-friendly makeover.
Let's start by taking a closer look at the table's condition and the supplies you'll need for this project.
Assessing the Table:
Before diving into the makeover, it's essential to evaluate the table's current state. This particular table had been exposed to the elements for approximately two years, resulting in water stains, spider webs, and timber damage. The timber was starting to show signs of rot, making it the perfect candidate for a refreshing makeover.
Tools and Supplies You'll Need:
- Paintbrush
- Roller
- Sander (Orbital Sander Is Best)
- Varnish (Oil-based for durability, gloss finish)
- Degreaser
Now that you've gathered your supplies, let's get started.
Step 1: Cleaning:
Cleaning might not be the most exciting part, but it's a crucial step in the restoration process. To begin, mix your degreaser with hot water for optimal cleaning power. Using a sponge, start cleaning the table's surface, paying special attention to any grooves or hidden areas.
Depending on the table's condition, this step may require some elbow grease to remove dirt and grime effectively. Don't forget to clean the legs and the underside of the table for an overall fresh look.
Step 2: Sanding:
Sanding is vital to creating a smooth surface for the varnish to adhere to. You'll need a sander for this step. Begin with coarse grit sandpaper (e.g., 80 grit) to remove the old varnish. Take your time and ensure that you cover the entire surface evenly. Once the old finish is gone, switch to a finer grit (e.g., 240 grit) to achieve a smooth, uniform surface.
Make sure to sand evenly and keep the sander as flat as possible. This step might take some effort, but it's crucial for the final result.
Step 3: Applying Varnish:
After sanding, it's time to apply the varnish. Stir the varnish thoroughly before use to ensure all components are well-mixed. For the first coat, using a paintbrush allows you to push the varnish into grooves and gaps effectively. Apply the varnish evenly across the table's surface. Don't be alarmed if you notice a change in the timber's colour; this is typical when applying a top coat. If you want to alter the timber's colour, do so before applying the top coat. Let the first coat dry for at least six hours.
During this time, the varnish will bond with the wood, creating a protective and visually appealing finish.
Step 4: Sanding Between Coats:
To achieve a smooth finish, sand the table with a high-grit sandpaper (e.g., 320 or 400 grit) between coats. This step helps remove any imperfections and dust that may have settled on the surface during drying.
Sanding between coats ensures that each layer of varnish adheres well and contributes to the overall durability of the finish.
Step 5: Applying Additional Coats:
For the second and subsequent coats, you can opt for a roller to achieve a smooth and even finish. Ensure that each coat is thin to prevent air bubbles. Roll the varnish back and forth to eliminate any air bubbles and achieve a flawless look.
Thin coats dry faster and provide better results than attempting to apply a single thick coat. Multiple thin coats allow you to build up a protective layer gradually.
Step 6: Final Inspection:
Once you've applied the desired number of coats and allowed them to dry according to the product's instructions, inspect your refreshed outdoor table. You'll notice that the damage has been removed, and the table now boasts a beautiful gloss finish. It's now ready to shine in your outdoor space, providing years of enjoyment.
For just a fraction of the cost of buying a new outdoor table and a few hours of your time, you can revamp your outdoor setting and enjoy your like-new furniture for seasons to come.
