DIY Halloween Front Yard Display: 3 Easy Projects for a Spooky Setup

Halloween is the perfect time to get creative with your decorations

And this year, I am creating the ultimate DIY setup. With just a few easy DIY projects and Bunnings’ affordable Halloween range of decorations, I transformed my entryway into a spooky spectacle without breaking the bank.

In this post, I’ll walk you through three simple DIY Halloween projects that you can create at home: a glowing ghost, a creepy spider web, and a jack-o-lantern archway. Let’s dive in and get ready to haunt your yard in style! All of the products used for each project are listed in the separate tutorials below except the extra products I used to bring the whole display together which are linked below.

DIY Project 1: Ghostly Tomato Cage

This glowing ghost project is a fun and easy way to create some haunting Halloween décor, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to keep costs low. Here's how to make your very own spooky ghost for less than $20!

Materials Used In This Project:

Instructions:

1. Assemble the base: Place the basketball or foam ball on top of the tomato cage to form the ghost's head. Use sticky tape or glue to secure it in place.

2. Add arms: Cut the pool noodle to size and place it through the top section of the tomato cage to act as the ghost’s arms.

3. Light it up: Take a set of battery-operated fairy lights and wind them around the tomato cage, making sure to distribute the lights evenly for a glowing effect.

4. Dress the ghost: Drape a white sheet or tablecloth over the tomato cage to cover the entire frame.

5. Create the eyes: Cut two oval shapes from a black sock (or fabric scraps) and stick them onto the sheet to make spooky ghost eyes. 👀

And there you have it! A glowing ghost ready to light up your front yard and give your guests a playful scare.

DIY Project 2: Spider Web & Giant Spider

No Halloween yard display is complete without a spider web! This DIY spider web project uses large cotton rope to create a creepy web that’s perfect for hanging a giant plush spider. It’s easy, affordable, and adds a chilling touch to your Halloween décor.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Create the web structure: Start by tying one end of the cotton rope to a high point (I used a sensor on my front entry), but you could also use a hook or nearby tree branch.

2. Secure the web to the ground: Pull the other end of the rope to the ground and secure it with tent pegs, making sure the rope is taut.

3. Form the web strands: Cut several additional pieces of rope and attach them to the main vertical rope using a hot glue gun. Connect these pieces together in a circular pattern to mimic a spider web.

4. Add the spider: Once the web is complete, place your giant plush spider in the centre of the web. Adjust its legs to give it a realistic, creepy look.

Your DIY spider web is now ready to creep out anyone who comes near! 🕷️

DIY Project 3: Jack-o-Lantern Archway

For a bold entryway that welcomes trick-or-treaters with a spooky vibe, I built this simple jack-o-lantern arch using PVC pipes and some hanging lanterns. It’s reusable, budget-friendly, and easy to put together.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Spray paint the pipes: Start by spray-painting all three PVC pipes and joiners black to give them a sleek, spooky finish.

2. Measure and cut: Measure the width of your front entry and cut the PVC pipes to fit the space. The two side pipes will be the pillars, and the top pipe will connect them to form the arch.

3. Attach the pipes: Secure the PVC pipes to the pillars of your front entry using adjustable tie-down straps. Then, use the joiners to connect the top pipe to the sides.

4. Decorate with lanterns: Attach the jack-o-lantern lanterns to the arch using cable ties. Hang them at different heights to create a dynamic, eerie display.

This DIY jack-o-lantern archway is the perfect way to frame your Halloween decorations and welcome visitors with some spooky flair! 🎃

The Final Reveal: A Spooktacular Front Yard!

After completing all three DIY projects, it was time to put everything together for the ultimate Halloween display. I set up my ghostly tomato cages. Next, I added the giant spider web in the middle of my front entryway, creating a creepy backdrop for the spider to lurk. Finally, the jack-o-lantern archway stood proudly at the entrance, welcoming trick-or-treaters with a spooky glow.

To complete the look, I placed tree branches wrapped in fairy lights into pots, scattered some black-painted leaves, and added a pop-up zombie for extra wow factor. The combination of DIY projects and budget-friendly decorations from Bunnings created a cohesive, eerie atmosphere that was perfect for Halloween.

This DIY Halloween display is not only affordable but also fun to make with family and friends. With just a few supplies, you can transform your front yard into a spooky spectacle that will delight visitors all season long!

You could make all three projects like me or just pick and choose the ones you like. Either way I hope this has given you some fun halloween inspiration. So off you go, happy haunting! 🕸️🕷️
