Creating A Stunning Wood Panel Feature Wall
I'm super excited because in this article I’m going to show you how to create a beautiful stunning wood panel feature wall. This is not just like any other timber feature wall; this is going to be super easy because these panels are pre-cut and ready to install.
If you're new here, hi, I'm Jade, and I am here to teach you everything about DIY Home Improvement and Flipping Furniture.
Let's have a bit of a brief look at the tools that we're going to need to complete this project. You're not going to need a lot of tools in your tool belt to get this job done. The hardest part is going to be cutting out where the power points and outlets go, but let's have a look at what we're going to need.
- Timber Panels These particular panels are from the Wood Veneer Hub. They are the Natural Oak Acoustic Wood Slat Panels you can check them out here www.thewoodveneerhub.com.au/REFINISHWITHJADE and use the code REFINISHWITHJADE for 5% off.
- A Level - https://amzn.to/3wdsRti (Amazon) - The level is going to be used just for the first panel so that you can line that up and get it at that level. Therefore, every other panel that follows that is also going to be level.
- Screws - https://amzn.to/3HRdWHO (Amazon) I like to use the same color as the backing on the panels. The panels that I'm installing have a black backing; therefore, I'm using black screws. You can also get these panels with a grey backing.
- A Drill - https://amzn.to/42yLK6f (Amazon) because there are a lot of screws to install, and it's going to be a very slow process with a screwdriver. Doable but very slow and tedious. So, you can either use an impact drill if you've got one; this is what I'm going to be using for the project. Otherwise, you can use a little battery-operated drill https://amzn.to/3vZYKWd (Amazon) that you can easily pick up at the hardware store.
- A Multitool https://amzn.to/49qlM7n (Amazon) Jigsaw https://amzn.to/48XMTqk (Amazon) or handsaw https://amzn.to/3w3fz2J (Amazon) - To cut your panels. I'm going to be using the multi-tool today.
Let's get stuck into our transformation now.
There are so many different ways that you can create a wooden feature wall in your home. This is just one way, and this way is really easy. There are a few main benefits to using these panels compared to just getting Timber from the hardware store and using that to create the wood panel effect. These panels have an acoustic felt backing, which is perfect for sound absorption. They can be used in rooms where you want to try and contain the sound. The design of the panels with the felt backing is also really great for temperature control, but by far my favourite feature is how easy they are to install. I installed this entire wall in less than 2 hours.
- I simply laid out my first panel and grabbed out the level to make sure that it was level. Then I was able to start installing the panel with these screws. These are just black screws that I'm going through the felt backing into the plaster wall. If you don't want to install the panels with the screws, you can also apply glue to the back of the panel and glue them onto the wall. It's just going to be a little bit more sturdy if you do use the screws or even use a combination of glue with a few screws.
- As you can see the process is really quite easy. I'm just picking up each panel and then applying six screws in each panel to hold them onto the wall. I was really lucky in that I didn't need to cut the panels down to size. But if you have a ceiling height where you need to trim the bottom of the panels, you're going to need to use a jigsaw to cut the panels down before you start installing them. If you don't have access to a jigsaw, this can be done with a hand saw as well.
- So, when you get up to having your panel that you need to cut, if you've got any power points, you're going to need to cut the powerpoint out of the panel. Now, what you're going to do is get your measurements, and then you're going to mark your measurements onto the panel. You need to be able to put your powerpoint in so that the panel just slots nicely over that powerpoint. You're going to take your measurements; what I've done here is I've taken my measurements from the outside of my panel, basically lining my panel up here. Then I'm going to take my measurements from the outside of my powerpoint, from the inside of my power point up to the bottom of my powerpoint, and up to the top of my powerpoint.
- Once you have the measurements you need to mark them out on the panel. I use a pencil to draw on the measurements and create a pencil outline of the rectangle onto my panel, I can then cut that out so that my panel will slot onto the wall around the powerpoint nicely.
- This is going to be the hardest part of the installation process, cutting out your power points. Thankfully, the wall that I am installing this on only has one powerpoint outlet. If you've got a wall that's got multiple outlets, you're going to have to repeat this process a couple of times.
- I added a little bit of distance around the powerpoint when I did the measurements on the wall. I added a couple of mil because I want to make sure that it's got plenty of space and that it's not too tight to fit when I've cut it out.
- Now I've got that measurement all laid out on the panel I am ready to cut. It's easier for me to drill the corners, and then I have a gap where I can insert the multi-tool into the slot so that it’s a little bit easier to get a nicer cut. Drilling the holes in the corner is also going to work better if you're using a jigsaw so that you've got a place where you can insert the blade from the jigsaw.
- Once I had this cut down to size, I installed this panel and the last couple of panels onto the wall, and I was done.
Here it is, the end result.
I absolutely love how this wood panel feature wall has transformed the look and feel of this room. I've also done a little bit of updating with the home decor elements. But if you want to have a go for yourself, these amazing timber panels are linked above in the products and tools section. You can even get a sneaky discount.
I’ll see you in the next project. xx
