Before We Begin:

Let's start by taking a quick look at the coffee table in its original state. While there was nothing inherently wrong with it, the client wanted to give it a fresh makeover, and that's precisely what we're going to do.

This was a commission piece, so I was given a brief of how she wanted it refinished and what colours she would like.

  • Step 1: Stripping the Varnish

To kick off this project, I reached for my trusty belt sander. Using a belt sander is a quick and efficient way to remove the original varnish from the tabletop.

Remember to apply steady pressure and maintain control while sanding. You can also use alternative methods like a carbide scraper or an orbital sander based on your preferences. This step ensures a blank canvas for our creative vision.

  • Step 2: Sanding to Perfection

After using the belt sander, it's essential to refine the surface further. I turned to my orbital sander, starting with an 80-grit sandpaper and gradually progressing to 120-grit and 240-grit.

This multi-grit approach ensures a smooth and flawless surface, perfect for painting or staining. The key here is patience and attention to detail.

  • Step 3: Sanding Those Tricky Edges

Don't forget about the edges! Sanding the edges can be a bit more challenging, but it's crucial for achieving a cohesive look.

I used a combination of handheld sandpaper and my orbital sander to ensure that every nook and cranny was properly prepped. It's worth the extra effort for a polished finish.

  • Step 4: Scuff Sanding

Now, let's talk about scuff sanding. This step is often underestimated but plays a vital role in paint adhesion. I recommend using a scuff sanding technique to create a rough surface that promotes paint bonding.

It's a bit time-consuming, but trust me; it's worth it in the end. Proper scuff sanding ensures our paint job lasts.

  • Step 5: Deep Cleaning

Before moving on to the fun part, painting, it's crucial to give your piece a thorough cleaning. I used a degreaser to ensure the surface was free from any dirt or contaminants.

Cleaning may not be the most exciting step, but it's an essential one. A clean canvas sets the stage for a flawless finish.

  • Step 6: Applying Primer

Now, let's unleash the power of primer! Primer is like the superhero of furniture refinishing. Apply an even coat of your chosen primer to the entire piece.

I used Zinsser BIN primer, which can be a bit tricky to work with due to its sticky nature and tendency to show brushstrokes.

However, don't worry if it looks patchy at first; we'll address that later. Primer is the foundation for a durable and long-lasting finish.

  • Step 7: Paint Your Heart Out

With the primer in place, it's time to paint. For this coffee table, I selected a beautiful colour called Myrtle from PureCoat, a stunning country green. I opted to apply the paint entirely with a paintbrush to ensure even coverage, given the piece's intricate details.

Depending on your preferences, you can use a roller for larger areas. Let your creativity shine through as we bring our vision to life.

  • Step 8: Fine-Tuning the Paint

Achieving a perfect finish might require a little touch-up. After the initial paint application, go back and address any visible brushstrokes or areas that need additional coverage.

Remember, refinishing furniture is an art, and attention to detail pays off. Take the time to refine our masterpiece.

  • Step 9: Applying the Top Coat

Since this coffee table is destined to be a high-traffic area, I decided to add an extra layer of protection with an oil-based top coat.

Apply two coats of the top coat, allowing ample drying time between coats. Oil-based paint takes longer to dry, so be patient. The top coat ensures our hard work stands the test of time.

  • Step 10: Admire Your Work

Once I had completed all the necessary steps, it was time to take a moment to appreciate the handiwork. This coffee table has undergone a remarkable transformation, and it's ready to shine in its owner's home.

The dedication and hard work paid off, and now my client has a stunning piece to enjoy.
